Sometime early in my childhood, my mother got herself this amazing Nativity Set in mat porcelain, pale colors and rhinestones. I can't seem to find a picture of it, so just imagine all the prettyness by yourselfs. But it is something like this, only pale in the colors:

Even tho I'm not a Christian, I've wanted a set for myself for a very long time now, but it is impossible to find a set that looks like hers or that's at a reasonable price...cause I'm picky as all hell.

Some time last year, before Christmas, I came across a blogger that had purchased this book and knitted her own set. And then it hit me that I could make my own figurines. But frankly, I do not like the looks of these, and the price is crazy to say the least...

When I discussed it with my mother she only laughed and told me that if I wanted a good set, I should buy one cause knitted ones would only look like crap anyways. She then told me that she had seen a set in wood, a bit more modern looking at a store that would be more my style and told me to go and look at them during the New Years sale. So I did, but I hated them. Imagine these, but all in one solid color...

Needless to say that I didn't buy them, so the quest is still on.

A few weeks ago, I started to think about maybe knitting a set again, and I started to look for one, but sadly, the ones I found were horrible or missing most of the characters I wanted.

BUT, I did find two patterns I kinda like, but they both have each their errors. The first one is too cartoony for my taste, but it has all the characters I wanted and even a camel which isn't important (I'd rather it be an ox or a cow instead). It costs £5 (about $8) so it's not that bad.

But then I came across this set at a norwegian page which I really love! It's more historical and serrious, so I was about to go for it right away...until I noticed that it's missing the angel, a character I NEED to have in my set. It also costs twice as much as the cartoony one, so I'm again at a loss.

So I'm writing this journal to ask for your help. What should I do? I've asked several people allready but it seems like it's 50/50 between the sets, so I don't know... Or is there maybe more patterns out there that I've missed? I'm not that good with making 3D objects without patterns, so making one up myself is out of the question. Neither can I crochet so I bet I'm missing out on some great patterns there too.
If you know of any patterns that looks good with all the characters (Maria, Josef, baby Jesus with a crib, The Three Kings/Wise Men, 1-3 sheppards, sheep, donkey, angel (optional: ox/cow, camel)), please let me know.

Came here to say congrats for winning the Wizard of Oz contest and saw this journal. Looking at the details in the second one, I'd say it is a good bet. The hoods and robes for the last one looks more diverse, instead of just being different colors in the cartoony one. As far as the angel, all you would need is a set of wings. I have bought patterns in the past for only one piece, but regretted it because it wasn't the size I needed, or didn't work with what I wanted it for. I wish I knew more about knitting I could talk you through making some. If you have to, you could make them with felt. I know it wouldn't be as good seeing as the rest would be yarn, but in a pinch you could use felt. I'd say, get the last one. It may be more expensive but I think you will be happier with the result. Plus, you could make more sets over the years to sell or give away as gifts. Its up to you, I hope she appreciates all the effort you are going through! I can't wait to see what you make.
